this is the first time i am asking anyone about this so am a little embarrassed but thought someone would be able to help.

my 10 year old son seems very disinterested in group sports. he loves playing ball with me and i thought it'd be good for him to join a team. this has caused him to go into temper tantrums and not want to talk to me about sports or anything else.

any suggestions? thanks - john

hi john. i would suggest you click the links on the left side of the page, they have a lot of information and can help you and your son to understand the feelings and why they may be happening.

also to consider:
1) have you or your wife or anyone in the family have a history of social anxiety or any type of anxiety? genetics can be a part of the problem/solution.

2) what is the feeling like when at the group sport meetings? is there already an established parent group/child group? do most the children seem involved or confused? environment can be another factor to the problem/solution.

thanks for writing in and good luck to you and your son!

oh and also, if the links do not send you in the right direction and you are worried about your son's on-going behavior, please do not hesitate to contact your doctor. they can usually help or send you in the right direction to meet with someone who can. =D
